The LORD Who Hides His Face

I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.

Isaiah 8:17

What a word. In the midst of destruction and the threat of evil, Isaiah chose to wait for the LORD. Even though the LORD had hidden His face, Isaiah waited for the LORD. Because he knew that the LORD would not forsake His people.

  • God had promised that One from the seed of the woman would crush the serpent’s head.
  • God had promised that the Seed of Abraham would bless all nations and that the scepter would not depart from Judah.
  • God had promised that He would build an eternal house for the obedient Son of David.
  • Isaiah knew that those walking in darkness would see a great light, and a Son would be born with the government on his shoulders.
  • Isaiah knew that a Son would be born with the name “Mighty God.”

Therefore, though God was hiding His face, Isaiah knew it was only for a moment. So he waited. So he hoped.

Oh Lord, help us to trust, even when You hide Your face. Help us to remember Your great and precious promises. Help us to wait in hope. Amen.
